The supermarket said it was to avoid duplicating recycling services offered by local councils
A recycling centre at a Sainsbury's store in Nottinghamshire has been permanently closed. The removal of bins from the car park of the supermarket in Sir John Robinson Way, Arnold comes after customers reported "dreadful" piles of rubbish being left in the area.
However Sainsbury's said the decision was made to avoid duplicating recycling services offered by local councils. Around half a dozen bins, which included those collecting glass, cardboard and paper, have been replaced by orange plastic fencing. A sign in front reads: "The recycling centre is permanently closed. Your nearest tip is Calverton. CCTV is in operation and registrations will be passed on to the police of anyone fly tipping."Two Oxfam collection bins remain at the site. A spokesperson for Sainsbury's said in a statement: “We regularly review our services to ensure we’re helping customers in ways that benefit them the most.
"To avoid duplicating the recycling services offered by local councils, we’re instead focusing on materials which are traditionally harder for customers to recycle at home, such as flexible plastics, which we collect in all our supermarkets.” Back in July, the supermarket apologised after large piles of rubbish began building up at the centre.
A range of both recyclable and non-recyclable were left, including child toys, cardboard and a mattress.
