Next year, when thousands gather at the starting point for the Martin Luther King Jr. March, they'll find the MLK Academy, a SAISD school being renovated.
Thousands meet at the Martin Luther King Jr. Academy of the Arts every year in January to kick on one of the biggest marches in the country. But in 2025, they’ll be met with construction as the school undergoes a complete campus overhaul. The academy will be redesigned and rebuilt as a new state-of-the-art school as part of the San Antonio Independent School Board ’s 2020 Bond. Proposed upgrades include high-speed connectivity, inside and outside security cameras and classroom audio systems.
San Antonio teens tour the world with Students of Service nonprofit Principal Miriam Aguilar invited guests to the auditorium stage to share campus memories. The principal, who ended her second year at MLK, expressed pride and sadness about the school’s closure. Aguilar said the students deserved a new building. “It is a historical beauty, but what makes it so special are the people inside,” Aguilar said. “In all of my years of teaching, this is where I found my heart.
Mission of love: Pastor gets help from friends to build community center Arlington R. Callies, son of the Rev. Raymond A. Callies, had longed to return to the school. His father is credited with founding San Antonio’s MLK March. Callies recalled his father, who taught woodworking at the school, often brought him along to the wood shop. He said that in the 1980s, his father led a rally at the district office to have the school renamed after the slain civil rights leader.
‘We’re somebody’: Museum director’s experiences shaped her mission to preserve Black history After the program ended, assistant principal Cynthia Trejo showed filmmaker Aundar Ma’at the murals of King that covered two walls on the first floor. Curtis C. Braziel painted them in 2007. “This building, this school, really reflects the spirit and the soul of the people in this community,” Ma’at said. “They were educated within these walls and went out and had an impact on the world.
