Campaigners fear a key part of Salford's history could be lost under plans to build new apartments on land that includes a former canal. Developer H2O Urban aims to build 204 apartments on Upper Wharf Street, incorporating a park area over the abandoned Manchester, Bolton and Bury canal. While the developer claims to have worked with the Canal and Rivers Trust to protect the canal line, the Manchester, Bolton and Bury Canal Society objects, arguing that landscaping and a walking path would hinder future restoration efforts. The council approved the development, but agreed to revisit affordable housing contributions in the future.

A key part of Salford ’s history could be lost under plans to build new apartments in the city, campaigners say. Developer H2O Urban aims to start building more than 200 new homes on a piece of land on Upper Wharf Street, which includes creating a park area over a section of the former Manchester, Bolton and Bury canal which was abandoned in 1961 and filled in.

The group called for the canal’s former towpath to be restored as part of any work building on the land. More than 120 residents also objected, with many urging that more is done to restore this part of Salford’s history. Al Franco, from MBBCS, said the former canal has ‘national’ significance and was used to carry coal during the Industrial Revolution which transformed Salford.

But the application to develop the land was approved by Salford council during a meeting on February 6. In a knife-edge decision, six councillors voted to approve the scheme with four voting against, and one abstention.
