The ‘architecturally important’ venue dates back to 1899 and has been on the Theatres at Risk Register for nearly 20 years
A historic theatre which has served the people of Greater Manchester and beyond for more than 124 years is set to go under the hammer this week - but residents are hoping it will fall into the hands of an owner who wants to preserve its original purpose.
The building, which has also been used as a cinema and a furniture shop over the years, also features what is thought to be one of the only surviving complete examples of substage machinery in the country - equipment that is used to lift a stage. The SVTT campaign group are urging for the new owners to ensure the venue remains as an asset for Salford’s arts and culture scene - with the campaigners hoping future use will see the building continue as a theatre.
In another post proposing to share its findings about the significance of the building, the group said: “The SVTT has had a good relationship with all previous owners. We would be happy to share our early viability study on the building and would welcome a buyer who recognises the huge potential for the future of this building to be reopened as a theatre.”
