Salford City and Grimsby Town face off in a crucial League Two play-off semi-final second leg, with the winners set to play either Notts County or Chesterfield in the final at Wembley.
Hello and welcome to our live coverage of Salford City ’s League Two play-off semi-final second leg against Grimsby Town . Salford are aiming for an historic promotion to the third tier and start the night as favourites to reach Wembley having won the first leg 2-1 last weekend.
Karl Robinson’s side finished fourth in the league table, narrowly falling short of automatic promotion on the final day of the season. Grimsby, who knocked Manchester United out of the Carabao Cup earlier his season, finished seventh. The winners will play either Notts County or Chesterfield in next weekend’s final at Wembley with that tie also concluding tonight.
Kick off at the Peninsular Stadium is 7.15pm and we will bring you all the build-up, action, reaction and analysis with our blog so stay with us. You can't visit Salford City FC and not mention them can you!
No sign of any of the fabled Class of 92 in attendance just yet and no word as to whether any of them will be here but we'll be on famous face watch as the evening unfoldsAnd it was Grimsby who ran out winners on both occasions. They were 2-0 winners here in October and won the reverse fixture 3-1. Either of those scorelines tonight would send the Mariners to Wembley. Nothing wrong with my maths!
Salford though have a very good home record. That Grimsby game was one of just three league defeats here all season. This is the first time I've had the pleasure of the Peninsular Stadium and it's a compact, modern ground basking in the evening sunshine.
Not many fans in here yet with kick off more than an hour away but a smattering of away fans have taken up their positions in the terrace behind one of the goalsKelly N'Mai was 10 years old when he got the chance to live out the childhood dream of almost every little boy growing up in the Netherlands. Invited to spend four weeks training with Ajax, there was only one problem: he was booked on a flight to Manchester the day after it ended to begin a new life in Salford.
N'Mai went along anyway and felt his trial had gone well at the biggest club in the country and one of the world's best hotbeds of young talent. But he never did hear back. His parents had decided they were leaving, and that was that; the dream was dead.
They had decided to leave the small Dutch city of Almere for the benefits of a better education system in England, and N'Mai, along with his older brother and his younger brother and sister, had to go along with it. Salford finished fourth, on 81 points, but only three clear of seventh place Grimsby in a congested play-off race. Salford missed the chance to go up automatically on the final day when they were held by Crawley Town.
A win there would have seen them overhaul Cambridge United, who also drew their final game having began the day with a two point advantage. In the end it wasn't to be for Robinson's side and they will now hope to go up at Wembley on Bank Holiday Monday if they can get the better of Grimsby tonight and then either Notts County or Chesterfield in the final.
Good evening and welcome to the Peninsular Stadium for our coverage of Salford's League Two play-off semi-final second leg against Grimsby. The hosts are looking to reach Wembley and ultimately secure a place in the third tier for next season. They start as favourites having won the first leg in Grimsby 2-1.
Karl Robinson's side have a strong home record this term and will be confident of completing the job tonight but Grimsby will provide a stern test and it is all set up to be an enthralling encounter.
