Which doesn’t even get to Hartman, who departs Wake Forest as the school’s all-time passing leader with 12,967 yards, a number that is second in the ACC to only Philip Rivers. Hartman leaves with 127 total touchdowns, too, a figure that is second in ACC annals to Tajh Boyd.
Exactly three weeks after that media day appearance, Wake Forest announced that Hartman was sidelined indefinitely. He had been diagnosed with Paget-Schroetter syndrome, a blood clot in his subclavian vein that required multiple surgeries. There was genuine internal concern about Hartman ever playing football again.
So yes, those aforementioned feelings of success can be precious. And as inspiring as Hartman’s return to the field was, this past season did not come and go without its rough patches: He had six turnovers at Louisville amid a three-game losing streak, and Wake lost to all three in-state ACC opponents for the first time since 2015.that won over the nation.
