The Balmaclellan-born actor, 43, has played Jamie Fraser on the Scots historical fantasy show since 2013.
The series, which is due to come on its midseason break, will end after its eighth instalment.
In a new interview with The Herald, Sam revealed that he lobbied for an extra season of the show to finish the story for fans. “We were supposed to finish this season and I didn’t want to finish without finishing the story and that is the reason why we are going back to do one more,” he said.. He continued: “Having said that, Diana is still writing the 10th book and there is plenty more that we haven’t been able to cover. We will have to end it some way. Perhaps not a way that the books end it. I am pushing for a different ending, but I don’t think I am going to get what I want.
This comes after Sam admitted he is one of the only people who knows how the Outlander series will end. Speaking to Esquire UK, he said: "Diana Gabaldon [the writer-creator] actually revealed to me how the whole thing’s going to end.
