The women’s national team’s run to the World Cup semi-finals has shown what can be achieved. But it’s on football to spend taxpayer money wisely.
used her voice and platform to put the boot into grandstanding politicians after the World Cup semi-final at Stadium Australia.
Government funding is a murky swamp to wade into, particularly in comparison to other codes, but Kerr and everyone else who has dropped the f-word in recent weeks are right: the model is atrociously skewed against football — both men and women. It’s a flawed model when success on the biggest stage doesn’t earn an extra dollar from the government, although you’d think the Matildas’ run at this tournament, and the Socceroos’ unexpected display in the men’s competition in Qatar last year, will force a policy change.
This World Cup has given FA significant clout, and it could not have come at a better time as it wrangles with Qatar, with its bottomless pit of money, to host the 2026 Women’s Asian Cup.After months of cautious interest, governments at all levels are suddenly enthusiastic about hosting the tournament, which was hugely successful when Australia hosted the men’s in 2015. Funny that.
