Football Australia chief executive James Johnson has confirmed the governing body was blindsided by the news that Sam Kerr had faced court in the UK. The Matildas captain was charged six weeks ago with racially harassing a police officer in a January 2023 incident that followed a complaint about a taxi fare.
Johnson has so far only spoken to Kerr over a quick text message to check in on her wellbeing. Kerrr will not play in the matches or at the Olympics as she continues to recover from an ACL injury suffered in January this year. Johnson declined to address whether the 30-year-old striker would captain the team if she returns prior to next year’s court case. “We need to establish our own facts,” he said.
