Sam Thompson on his ADHD documentary and the 'most challenging moment' filming
We might all feel as though we know him. But, as Sam points out during his brand new documentary, he wasn't sure if he even really knew himself.previouslyWe spoke exclusively to Sam to reflect on his experience of filming the documentary, his ADHD diagnosis and what he hopes people take away from watching the one-off episode. To be honest, I've always known I was different, but as life started"lifeing" and I took on more responsibility, it became more apparent.
For sure. I think there are lot of people out there who are in the position I was in, wondering like, what's wrong with me? Why do I feel like I can't be as reliable and organised as I want to be? And then thinking that maybe I’m just coming up with excuses and doubting myself or something. Was there anything that you filmed that didn't make it into the final documentary, or that you wish viewers had seen?
Neurodiversity is all new to people in my mum's generation. And obviously I loved having old Peter Wicks involved – he really is my best mate and like a big brother to me, so he gave me a lot of reassurance. And then there's also what I hope family members or close ones to someone who does have ADHD take away. I hope it helps them see a bit easier what it's like and what's going on for that person… and then there's the third element, for people who maybe don't know anyone who has ADHD, but one day they might? And just building that awareness and knowledge.Totally – one of the biggest things it's brought is greater self-awareness.
You'll see it on the show but after I found out I decided with the doctors that I'd try the medication to see if could help me manage a bit better with the stuff I struggle with, but I found that it just wasn't for me. It can be life changing for some people, but it's such a personal thing.
