The game has traditionally served as the opening game for that day's college football slate. It is possible that the 2024 game's later kick is a result of the two teams'UT Austin planning 'Texas-sized party' for first-ever SEC event The Longhorns will enter the SEC and the 2024 season as one of the nation's most watched and hyped teams, after the 2023 campaign saw the Longhorns reach the College Football Playoff for the first time in its brief existence.
The 2024-25 season will be the first that will feature 12 teams in the playoff, with the four highest-ranked teams receiving byes into the quarterfinals. The lowest-ranked conference champion will be the No. 5 seeded team, while the remaining seven seeds will be filled out by the highest-ranked at-large, non-conference champion teams.
As it stands, the Longhorns currently have the third-highest odds to win the National Championship, behind only fellow SEC foe Georgia and perennial powerhouse Ohio State. The Longhorns will face Georgia at DKR Memorial Stadium on Oct. 19, exactly one week after the Red River Rivalry.
