Former World Cup winner Sami Khedira admits he almost joined Manchester United but was prevented by then-manager Louis van Gaal.
Sami Khedira, the 2014 World Cup winner, revealed that he had come close to joining Manchester United but was blocked by former manager Louis van Gaal. Khedira, a highly decorated midfielder who won numerous trophies with Stuttgart and Real Madrid, admitted that playing in the Premier League was one of his biggest dreams. During an appearance on talkSPORT at the FIFA Club World Cup in the US, Khedira recounted his failed attempt to move to Old Trafford.
He stated that while there were discussions and the club showed interest, a certain manager stood in his way. When pressed for details, Khedira identified the manager as a Dutch individual, prompting talkSPORT host, Goldstein, to correctly guess Louis van Gaal. Van Gaal managed Manchester United from 2014 to 2016, leading the team to a single FA Cup victory during his tenure. Khedira, who spent two years with Juventus after leaving Real Madrid in 2015, had a successful career despite missing out on the Premier League. He won the Bundesliga with Stuttgart, the LaLiga title, two Copa del Reys, and the Champions League with Real Madrid. At Juventus, he added five Serie A titles, two Coppa Italias, the Italian Super Cup, and reached the Champions League final in 2017, where they were defeated by his former club, Real Madrid. The 37-year-old also shared his perspective on the ongoing debate surrounding the greatest footballer of all time, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Khedira, who played alongside Ronaldo for seven years at Real Madrid and Juventus, expressed his unwavering support for the Portuguese superstar.
