National Day of the Cowboy on Saturday will spotlight cowgirls, charreada competitors, cattle women and sharpshooters.

Sometimes, when Valeria Karlota Medina takes part in a downtown photo shoot clad in the distinctive ruffled ensemble she wears when she competes in charreadas, passers-by will stop and ask her where she’s dancing or singing. “I’m like, 'No, I don’t do that, I ride horses,' and I walk off, because I don’t have the time to explain to them what exactly we do,” said Medina, 26, who has competed in the Mexican sport, which is similar to rodeo, all her life.

“So we’re highlighting not just cowgirls but women in the West, from the pioneers to the sharpshooters to the cattle women to the stagecoach drivers.” The latter will be covered by storyteller Antoinette Lakey, who will talk about Mary Fields, the first Black woman to drive a stagecoach. Museum admission will be free during the festivities. Medin said she is excited to be in the mix. Her image has been featured at the museum in the past.
