The Gunter Hotel is undergoing renovations to its guest rooms, common areas and restaurant space. The shutdown may lead to the layoffs of 75 employees.
Downtown ’s historic Gunter Hotel is temporarily closed due to flooding after a water pipe broke during renovations of the 116-year-old building. Owner Axle Capital ’s makeover of the 322-room hotel at 205 E. Houston St. , which began early this year, is refurbishing and reducing the number of guest rooms and upgrading the lobby, bar and restaurant. The hotel has operated under the Sheraton banner but will be part of Marriott ’s Tribute Portfolio of independent hotels.
Luxury InterContinental hotel opens with dining options in downtown San Antonio “We plan to resume operations as soon as we are able and will welcome back our staff, with hotel operations anticipated to resume before the end of the year,” a spokesperson told the Express-News. Businessman Jot Gunter built the hotel in 1909 on land that had been used for lodging as early as 1837, a year after the battle of the Alamo.
