See what was inside the time capsule buried at what was once San Antonio's biggest shopping center.
Editor's note: This story was published March 27, 2023. A landmark to many on the South Side of San Antonio before its sad decline, McCreless Mall opened 62 years ago this month. When the now-shuttered McCreless Shopping City opened March 29, 1962, it was San Antonio’s largest shopping center and occupied a whopping — for its day — four city blocks. “We’ve built big to take care of the demands for the future,” developer G. Sealie McCreless told the San Antonio Express in 1960.
More San Antonio history: Bury me in my Ferrari: How a California socialite was laid to rest in San Antonio Montgomery Ward was the largest of the 32 tenants in the mall and occupied a two-level building that contained 106,000 square feet of floor space. There were 43 merchandise departments, an outdoor sales area and an eight-car service station. Other original tenant highlights at the mall were Alwais Toy Box and Luby’s Cafeteria.
