The Rise School is the latest Texas early childhood education program that sets out to serve all children, including those with disabilities.

Mothers Madison O'Brien and Krystal O’Brien read with their daughters, Amelia, 4, and Eloise, 11 months, on Wednesday. Madison O’Brien’s adopted sibling is disabled, so she wanted her children to learn alongside students of varying abilities.Parents of children with disabilities have found that many early childhood education programs in San Antonio lack the expertise, staff and resources to provide meaningful educational experiences for their children.

Knowing other families were likely facing the same issues, the family came together with others to start the Rise School San Antonio, the newest school in a network focused on preparing children from a young age for success in kindergarten. “Having a set of twins where one has Down Syndrome and the other one doesn’t, I see every day, how they mirror each other and encourage each other in different ways,” he said. “So knowing that that is a microcosm, in my household, I thought it was an awesome thing to be a part of, to help kind of get as a resource for the city of San Antonio.”

The full-inclusion model is also important to parents like Madison O’Brien, who plans to enroll her typically developing daughter, 11-month-old Eloise, into the school when it opens.
