Downtown San Diego alone has around 1,600 new apartments opening in 2024. There are nearly 50 complexes under construction throughout the county.

If you're sick of your roommate, there will be new options this year. There are more than 4,000 new apartments opening across San Diego County in 2024, with the vast majority downtown. Yet it isn't just where you expect new complexes to be: Zoning changes and a push for housing mean projects spread all over the county. There are roughly 50 housing complexes opening from National City to Oceanside, with many planning to command high rents.

Builders, said National City is mistakenly ignored by most developers but works out well for his San Diego-based company. He said the company has found a niche of developing rentals for people earning $77,200 to $98,100 a year with moderate rents. 'We are really focused on workforce housing,' he said recently during a tour of the property.

opened another apartment complex called Mariner's Landing in 2019 next to The Commodore. Hutchinson said about half the 62 apartments in Mariner's Landing are filled by Navy personnel and their families, and he expects a similar situation at The Commodore. Both projects are close to Navy facilities in National City. The new apartment complex cost roughly $35 million, and takes up a 2.4-acre spot that previously had three single-family homes on it. Construction took about two years.

estimates a 10 percent reduction in energy bills for renters. The building is three to four stories, meaning some people have views of downtown, the Coronado Bridge and Cabrillo National Monument. Views to the east are mostly mountains. Amenities at The Commodore include a pool , hot tub , barbecue pits in an outdoor common area, washer and dryers in each unit, community room with TV, chairs and kitchen space.

started leasing the property in mid-February and already has had three tenants move in, even though the building won't be fully completed until late March. San Diego County's biggest apartment project is the mixed-use West complex taking the place of the former county courthouse on Union Street in downtown San Diego.
