San Diego Ballet artistic director Javier Velasco has re-set the 1841 French ballet in early San Diego to give the story more local relevance
The San Diego Ballet version of “Giselle” has moved from Europe, where it premiered in 1841, to Spanish Colonial California, where a fragile peasant girl falls in love with a wealthy man who is secretly engaged to another. Artistic director Javier Velasco created a localized version of the Romantic ballet, which will be presented next weekend at the Balboa Theatre, in order to make the story more relevant to San Diego’s landscape and history.
Though the traditional elements of “Giselle” remain intact, the movement language in this production will have hints of ballet folklorico, with its intricate footwork and festive skirt swishing. “The steps are our words and I want the dancers to be able to have the experience of dancing the steps we know and love in ‘Giselle,’” Velasco explained. “But there are some folkloric flourishes to give it a bit of flavor. There is an element of that when the peasants dance together.
