Reaser was someone bankers, government leaders and journalists would turn to when they needed to translate complex economics into real-world applications.

Lynn Reaser, chief economist at the Fermanian Business and Economic Institute at Point Loma Nazarene University, speaks at a 2021 news conference about a study she co-authored evaluating the city of San Diego creating a municipal utility.Lynn Reaser, who had cemented her national reputation as a revered economist long before joining San Diego’s Point Loma Nazarene University 15 years ago, died Tuesday.

Reaser’s next job, however, meant a move to Jacksonville, Fla., to become chief economist at Barnett Bank. It was her first time living outside of the Golden State, where she earned her Bachelor’s degree and doctorate in economics from the University of California Los Angeles. “Anytime anybody talked to her, it was like done deal. They wanted to come to Point Loma,” said Hess. “She was such an incredible woman.”

Ray Major, former chief economist at the San Diego Association of Governments, said Reaser’s research on the high cost of housing in the region was groundbreaking and was used to shape policy aimed at lowering fees for building.
