At 33, Tyler Heaps is the youngest sporting director in Major League Soccer
First, Heaps served as head of recruitment and insight for Right to Dream, the soccer academy that in time will funnel players to San Diego FC, the city’s MLS expansion franchise. Then he was named San Diego FC’s assistant sporting director, a job that saw him involved in the signing of Mexican star Hirving “Chucky” Lozano.
AS Monaco’s Carlos Aviña was widely reported to be heading to San Diego FC as the club’s sporting director,. The club “couldn’t reach final terms” with the Mexican-born Aviña, SDFC CEO Tom Penn told the U-T earlier this summer. Heaps has represented the club at numerous MLS gatherings since then. “We’re a group and an organization that knows how we want football to look,” Heaps told the Union-Tribune on Wednesday. “It’s about both efficiency and challenging our own decision-making.”At age 33, Tyler Heaps is the youngest sporting director in Major League Soccer.
The MLS Superdraft and expansion draft will both take place in December, and players are scheduled to report to their clubs on Jan. 11.
