City officials say they would make the experience more comfortable not only for people who are transgender or gender non-conforming but also for parents of young children.
Jeffrey Prince, of Pomona, exits the new gender-neutral restroom during the reopening of the renovated Claremont Library in Claremont on Monday, November 26, 2018. The improvements included ADA-compliant restrooms, a gender-neutral restroom, as well as a new heating and air conditioning system.San Diego may soon join other large cities like Seattle and Philadelphia in requiring that all new municipal restrooms be built without gender designations.
San Diego is taking advantage of a 2022 California law that gave cities and counties the discretion to require gender-neutral public restrooms. But unlike some other cities that have passed similar laws, San Diego won’t be requiring conversion to gender-neutral of the city’s gender-specific, single-occupant restrooms.“This is a fantastic idea — I can’t believe we didn’t have it before,” said Councilmember Marni von Wilpert.
“All-gender restrooms create safe and affirming spaces for the transgender and non-binary community — a right that we all deserve,” said Karina Piu of the San Diego LGBT Community Center. City officials said some fringe benefits of the new law are making things easier for parents with children and making use of public restrooms more efficient.
