The announcement comes soon after budget analysists raised concerns about the lease
….On Thursday, April 4, 2024, in San Diego, CA, Mayor Todd Gloria, if approved by the San. Diego City Council, plans on converting a vacant commercial building in the Middletown neighborhood into the City of San Diego’s largest-ever shelter for people experiencing homelessness. The new shelter on Kettner Blvd. would have approximately 1007 beds and office space in the two vacant buildings, on two floors, with a combined 60,000 sq. ft. of space.
City officials and the owner, San Diego businessman Douglas Hamm, have “tentatively agreed” on a 30-year lease, according to a news release. The land is not on the market, but if Hamm ever decides to sell, San Diego would have first dibs. Should the land end up sold to someone else within five years, the city could get 14 percent of the net profits.
During a media availability Wednesday, Council President Sean Elo-Rivera said he would remain open-minded until the final vote but still had “serious concerns” about the lease. “What the independent budget analyst said in the memo I think is something that gives the whole council a lot to think about.”
