Reaching the second weekend of NCAA Tournament in back-to-back seasons shows program on verge of a new level
In the ashes of a Sweet 16 blowout loss to fire-breathing UConn on Thursday at the TD Garden, legacy and a lingering question remained for San Diego State. The Huskies, the No. 1-overall-seed Huskies, the nine-straight-NCAA-wins Huskies, the come-at-you-from-all-angles Huskies constituted a bad matchup in a bad location on a bad shooting night.
That lingering question? The report card from 3. San Diego State finished dead last from that range in the 11-team Mountain West Conference. It closed 301st in the country from beyond the arc. The season success rate of 31.5 percent was the lowest since 1999-2000, when that 5-23 team under magician Steve Fisher's first team hit just 29.9 percent of its attempts.
