The campus pulled in a record $230 million last year to study subjects as diverse as climate change and artificial intelligence.
Junfei Xie, an SDSU associate professor of computer and electrical engineering, works with her students to improve drone technology San Diego State University’s decision to hire scores of faculty who are passionate about research is producing a flood tide of grant money that could eventually help the school become one of the nation’s most elite science centers.
The university said raising $100 million within a decade is considered an impressive achievement. SDSU could hit $300 million in annual research funding in about seven years, said Hala Madanat, vice president for research and innovation. It already raises far more than any of the other 22 campuses in the California State University system.
The university doubled down on research about a decade ago when it began a historic wave of hiring, largely to replace older faculty who were retiring. SDSU also wanted to become a more visible part of San Diego’s large and famous science community, which is dominated by UC San Diego.
