San Diego putting $350,000 from opioid settlement funds toward creating teams to work with overdose survivors before they leave the hospital
With several hundred people in the region dying every year from opioid overdoses, the city of San Diego is teaming up with UC San Diego Health to beef up services provided to people who land in the health system’s emergency rooms after such an overdose.
The money comes from San Diego’s $40 million cut of a massive settlement in a nationwide lawsuit targeting prescription opioid drug makers and distributors. The city is receiving its funding in annual chunks over 10 years. Another $1 million of San Diego’s settlement money this year will go toward education efforts.
The team will include two case managers and what UC San Diego Health calls a peer navigator, which is someone with lived experience who will not only work with the patient but will teach the medical care team about the real-world challenges people face following an overdose, be that seeking help or rejecting it.
Nearly 3,600 people in San Diego County have died from opioid overdoses over the last eight years, according to the council member. About 70 percent of those deaths were attributed to fentanyl.
