The suspect was arrested and booked into county jail on charges including felony battery on a police officer.
SAN JOSE – A man was arrested on suspicion of attacking a plainclothes police officer assigned to protect San Jose Mayor Mahan early Tuesday evening, police said.The incident happened just after 6 p.m., according to a statement issued by the San Jose Police Department. The mayor was being interviewed a journalist when a man “began displaying erratic behavior toward him and surrounding staff,” police said.
Despite repeated de-escalation attempts, the suspect continued to advance on the officer and eventually hit him, according to police. Footage of the incident posted to social media showed the suspect punching the officer in the head.
