A spokesman for the police department said that a construction company was digging around 9:30 a.m. along 41st Avenue between Hacienda Street and Alameda de las Pulgas when someone got stuck in the trench and was buried under the dirt. Around 10:15 a.m., the San Mateo Consolidated Fire Department set up their gear to rescue the person, who was still breathing and alert under the dirt. The police’s spokesman could not confirm whether or not the person was a construction worker.The road was still closed as of 11 a.m., but officials said they expected to reopen it by roughly noon.
The incident was under investigation by the San Mateo Police Detective Bureau, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the county district attorney’s office.
