Manchester United transfer news as Jadon Sancho exit talks continue but Chelsea swap proposal leaves more questions than answers
Somehow, a Raheem Sterling- Jadon Sancho transfer swap deal between Chelsea and Manchester United is not even in the top 10 most ridiculous things that could still happen in the summer window, let alone the list of things that have already gone before it. Only these two clubs could think up something as confusing.
Given that his competition to be a backup winger on either side is an out-of-form, out-of-confidence, out-of-favour Marcus Rashford and the same preamble for Antony, Sancho isn't far from playing.
Sancho at his best would have a lot to give United this season given the uncertainty around their attacking options - Amad is still raw, Rashford is out of sorts, and Antony is very much Antony - but banking on him getting back to that level is not proving wise for anyone. Just as unwise would be to single out Sterling as a replacement.
His goal contribution metrics stack up well compared to Sancho but not for a player with a previous record of hitting 20 goals in the Premier League. Although he is still able to contribute - and play on either wing, but certainly not centrally like Sancho - there are definite issues he has when it comes to sourcing chances himself.
Is he actually likely to get any of that to see things improve dramatically? That is just another question in a proposed deal - albeit from the Chelsea side - that has very few answers for United. Chelsea stand to gain much more than Dan Ashworth and Co both on the financial sheets and sporting side.
