A “business email compromise” has resulted in the theft of more than $850,000 when payment to a vendor was redirected to a fraudulent account, said the circuit court clerk and comptroller for Florida’s Santa Rosa County in a statement today.

In a news release, the Santa Rosa County Clerk of Courts agency said that on Friday it was notified that a recent payment to a vendor in the amount of $852,983.06 had been intercepted as a result of fraud. Upon notification, the agency’s finance department issued a fraud alert to its bank. The clerk’s office has been working with the Milton Police Department, Truist Bank and Regions Bank to recover the funds, according to the statement. The Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Department and the FBI are also involved in investigating the matter.
