The bank issued a warning to bank account holders
Santander has issued a warning on romance scams after customers lost £4,500 on average amid a 27 percent rise in the crime.
An Opinium survey for Santander conducted in July, surveying 2,000 people, found that half of participants received unsolicited online messages of a romantic or flirtatious nature which they suspected or have confirmed to be a scam. Almost one-third admitted they would consider offering financial assistance to a love interest they had known for under six months.
"Stay vigilant to spot a traitor, it'd be too easy if they simply messaged you out of the blue asking for your money. Approach any new relationship with cautious optimism, complete checks and having your wits about you at the start." The bank also advised: "Never send money or give card details, online account details, or copies of important personal documents to anyone you have only met online."
