Santorini, Greece has experienced another significant earthquake, measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale, as an ongoing swarm of tremors continues to shake the island. This follows thousands of earthquakes, many with magnitudes of three or higher, recorded since February 1st. A state of emergency remains in place, with over 11,000 residents and tourists evacuated from the island. Authorities are preparing for the worst while hoping for the best, with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis pledging £2.5 million for an emergency evacuation route.
Santorini has been hit with another large earthquake as swarms continue to roll through the Greek island.
But he cautioned that it was not a 'major earthquake' and 'is no different from previous strong earthquakes of 5, 5.1 or 5.2 on the Richter scale' as more tremors are recorded on Santorini. The previously considered strongest quake to hit the island, measuring 5.2, occurred last Wednesday and was even felt in Athens, Crete and parts of Turkey.More than 11,000 locals and holidaymakers have evacuated the island, with extra flights scheduled. Locals have been urged to stay away from ports and avoid gathering indoors, as emergency crews - including the army, fire service, and police - have been deployed across the island.
