Sarah Hunter faces challenges as a female rugby coach but that has done little to dampen her ambitions of reaching the top of the sport

Former French international turned head coach Gaelle Mignot was dubbed a “trailblazer” when she debuted alongside ex-defence coach David Oritz at last year’s tournament, but without more opportunities – and a change in perception – it could be a hard task for other aspiring female coaches to follow in her footsteps.
The programme – which Hunter was a part of last year alongside 16 other aspiring female coaches – focuses on developing existing coaching talent and identifying opportunities for new coaches. It was off the back of this that Hunter landed a spot on this year’s Red Roses Six Nations team as a defence coach.
“One of the next real work areas we’ve got to push through is to get more females into coaching, and coaching at a higher level,” he said.It seems this high performance academy has answered his prayers. World Rugby has set a target of seeing women make up a minimum 40 per cent of all coaches involved at the England-hosted 2025 World Cup, a target Hunter believes will have a much-needed ripple-effect.“Females need an up. Especially in the world of rugby, so let’s set the bar high and strive for it. We talk about younger players and how they get inspired – it’s all about visibility and being able to be seen. If you can see it, you can do it.
