Set up with the money left by Alexander McQueen, the Sarabande Foundation nurtures young creatives at the forefront of their respective fields by providing much needed scholarships and studio space. LOVE meets the artists pushing the boundaries in its East London headquarters.Compared to the compulsively exhibitionist tendencies of most fashion students, Sarah McCormack treads a more reticent path with regard to self-promotion and has chosen not to saturate social media with her work.
The clothes she makes now are much more high-concept: the ‘chronic masturbator’ corsets from her BA final collection, for example, and looks inspired by bodies preserved in peat bogs. But as she explains, these are just stories she makes up to help her think about design. ‘That chronic masturbator thing was a narrative in my head about this lonely creature living on their own planet who would try on human emotions and then hate them, because they discovered how shit it was to be human.
Right now she’s busy with a precollection of toiles, slowly taming her obsession with perfectionism. ‘I’ll spend ages trying to learn how to do very precise things and then realise the stuff I do that’s really rough and raw is muchbetter.’ She’d like to get a studio at Sarabande after her MA; her dream would be to continue her experiments by selling one-off pieces. ‘It’s really inspiring coming to Sarabande and seeing all the designers who’ve worked here.
The obvious ways forward weren’t for him. ‘I’ve got a lot of friends who started their own labels but it didn’t work out, not because they’ve not got the talent but because the industry’s not ready or other reasons. So I’m happy to be here taking it slowly.’ He still works in fashion, creating pieces and sculptures for designers such as long-term collaborator Charles Jeffrey – ‘It’s nice to go in as the non-fashion person’ – but most of his time here is spent on his art.
