Maxar, a satellite imaging company, released pictures of the Key Bridge in Baltimore before it collapsed and when the container ship struck the bridge.

Satellite imaging company Maxar has released images of the Singaporean container ship DALI wedged between the Francis Scott Key Bridge sections in Baltimore. The 1.6-mile longIn March of 1977, the Baltimore Bridge was opened to the public. Named in honor of the Maryland poet who wrote the words for the US national anthem, the bridge spanned the Baltimore harbor and Patapsco River. The bridge’s main span extended 1,200 feet and was the third longest in the world.

The pilots called for a hard rudder to port – meaning turn as left as possible and the anchor was dropped to slow down the ship, traveling at roughly nine miles an hour. The ship gave a mayday call before hitting the bridge, which facilitated a halt in traffic while driving onto the bridge, thus saving lives, asaid. The six people who remained on the bridge were construction workers tasked with filling potholes. Rescue operations were called off later, but only two workers were rescued. A recovery operation has now been initiated after others were presumed dead in the frigid conditions that prevailed in the river waters.
