The world's biggest oil exporter will cut carbon emissions, but not stop producing fossil fuels.
The world's biggest oil exporter, Saudi Arabia, has pledged to cut its carbon emissions to net zero by 2060.
Saudi Arabia's move does mark a shift for the world's 10th-largest emitter of carbon dioxide. It has long resisted calls to cut its investment in fossil fuels.Saudi officials asked the UN to play down the need to rapidly move away from fossil fuelsAt the launch of a climate conference in Riyadh, Prince Mohammed - Saudi Arabia's de facto ruler - said it would reach the target without affecting the "stability of global energy markets".
Richard Black, senior associate at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit , a UK-based think tank, described Saudi Arabia's net-zero target as "very welcome" but said the kingdom needed to publish a plan of how it would be achieved.
