Based on Patrick Radden Keefe’s non-fiction bestseller, the series is a sweeping and affecting history of the Troubles
In December 1972, Jean McConville, a widowed mother of 10, was taken from her Belfast home, driven to a remote location in the Republic of Ireland and murdered. More than 30 years later, two former members of the IRA — Dolours Price and Brendan Hughes — admitted their involvement in the killing and claimed it had been ordered by Gerry Adams. The former Sinn Féin leader has always denied the accusation.
The 1970s strand broadly chronicles Price’s rise within the IRA; her role in the Old Bailey bombing in London; the “disappearing” of suspected collaborators ; and her working relationship with Adams , depicted here as a ruthless mob boss with a politician’s demeanour. . Some scenes of shoot-outs, robberies and spying play out like a thriller.
