Scammers are using card-skimming devices to steal account information at point-of-sale card readers, leaving newly loaded cards empty.

The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services is warning residents about the rise in these thefts.ODJFS data reveals the scope of the problem. Since Oct. 1, 2022, the department has reimbursed Ohioans over $1.4 million in stolen SNAP benefits. The U.S. Department of Agriculture , which investigates SNAP fraud, reports at least 1,900 fraud claims filed in Ohio alone for 2023, totaling over $761,000 in stolen benefits.
As of February 2024, nearly 1.5 million Ohioans rely on SNAP benefits, that’s according to the ODJFS SNAP data map.Change your PIN regularly and avoid using simple sequences.Be aware of potential tampering on card readers before swiping your card.Copyright 2024 WOIO. All rights reserved.
