The Met Office warns of continued freezing winds from the east as a 'Scandinavian high' persists, leading to a cold snap and a health alert issued by the UKHSA. The agency predicts temperatures will remain slightly cooler than average with a 'chilly easterly breeze' throughout the week.
The Met Office has stated that a weather phenomenon known as a 'Scandinavian high' continues to bring freezing easterly winds to the UK. This comes as a cold health alert issued by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) remains in effect until 9am on Tuesday, February 11, amid the cold spell. Last week, the weather agency addressed concerns that a 'Beast from the East' was heading towards the UK as cold easterly winds caused temperatures to plummet.
It warned that easterly winds would bring colder conditions, making it feel significantly chillier than the actual temperatures. In a five-day overview posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, yesterday, February 9, the Met Office stated: 'A Scandinavian high sets itself up for the new week. This results in an easterly wind across the UK. This wind from the North Sea will bring widespread cloud, outbreaks of rain, and some hill snow...Feeling cold, particularly when exposed to the brisk wind.' On Saturday night, February 8, temperatures dropped to -8.6C in Altnaharra and Kinbrace, both located in northern Scotland. The Met Office forecasts that temperatures will be only slightly cooler than average today, with highs of 4C or 5C, but will feel close to freezing in the easterly winds. The agency forecasts that an area of high pressure will maintain this weather pattern throughout the week, with a 'chilly easterly breeze' continuing to affect the UK. The 'Scandinavian high' is a large area of high atmospheric pressure that develops over Scandinavia. It is one of the key factors driving extreme weather in the UK and can sometimes result in a 'Beast from the East', according to the Met Office. 'This type of high-pressure system can block our usual weather fronts attempting to move in from the Atlantic and, depending on the time of year, can lead to anything including sunny skies, freezing temperatures, and sometimes heavy snow,' explained Met Office meteorologist Honor Criswick. Forecasts suggest that wintery weather will persist in the UK. A Met Office long-range forecast, starting February 14, stated: 'East or southeasterly winds are likely at the start of this period. This maintaining below average temperatures and often cloudy conditions. 'There is a chance of colder conditions developing which would see an increase in wintry showers, especially in eastern and northeastern parts of the country. Meanwhile, Atlantic frontal zones, bringing milder conditions and rain, will attempt to move in from the west or southwest. 'Early in this period, these look likely to have limited influence over the UK though should they push further northeastwards this would increase the chance of snow for some areas. The balance between colder easterly winds and milder, wetter southwesterly winds remains unclear during mid-February though towards the end of this period, less cold conditions become more likely.
