Lenton residents believe a controlled explosion happened inside an encampment on Allington Avenue
Bomb squad experts seemingly blew up part of a Nottingham encampment after police were scrambled to a suspicious packages probe. Neighbours in Lenton believe the controlled explosion on Allington Avenue happened inside an encampment at the end of the street, which they said had been there for more than a year.
Streets in Lenton were shut as the bomb squad dealt with two suspicious objects that were found on Allington Avenue and on nearby Maxwell Court on Friday, June 28. While bomb squad engineers did carry out intentional detonations behind a vast police cordon, police later said the packages had posed no risk.
Residents on Allington Avenue, who were allowed to return home in the early hours of Saturday, June 29, pointed towards a muddled encampment within a set of garages as the likely location of the incident. A caravan parked inside was damaged, with its door seemingly powerfully mangled by a blast. Also inside the encampment were a pair of pedalos, green and yellow trailers and a basket hall hoop. The encampment had been there for more than a year, a number of locals said.
Council workers, who were initially called out to remove a fridge from the path next to the encampment, had made two visits to examine the site during Saturday morning - but a council staff member said it was unclear who owned the land. A local resident added his bin had been taken and added to a barrier of brown and green bins closing off the encampment from the road.
Nottinghamshire Police has said the controlled explosion was carried out by engineers “to enable access to a suspicious package in Allington Avenue,” but have not confirmed the exact location. As part of their investigation, police have detained a man under the Mental Health Act.
