A report into the National School Chaplaincy Program has suggested renaming the program and clearly defining the role of chaplains, but found the initiative worthwhile overall.

abc.net.au/news/national-school-chaplaincy-program-report-released/101902210An independent evaluation of The National School Chaplaincy Program has found there are benefits of having chaplains in schools, but has endorsed plans to broaden the scheme to include secular support staff. It supports the government's decision to gives schools a choice of hiring a chaplain or student wellbeing officer

Management consulting firm Dandolopartners was asked by the government to examine the NSCP in July last year and handed in its final report in November, butMore than 10,000 public submissions were made over 10 days, with 43 per cent of respondents based in Queensland and 74 per cent of those were not school-based stakeholders.

It found chaplains were critical because they could create a "more safe and supportive school environment" and "empower students by providing them with encouragement, advice and strategies". It recommended the federal government provide states and territories with clearer guidelines, including what constitutes proselytising.

The variations between the states and territories meant it was difficult for the government to monitor or oversee the program. The report supported the government's decision to open up the program in 2023, so that schools could use the funding to either hire a chaplain or student wellbeing officers and recommended changing the name of the program.

Mr Nduwimana said a few years after arriving in Australia, he met former Rugby Australia CEO Rob Clarke. “In 2017, I had a conversation with him. I was talking to him about how I loved the national anthem of Australia,” he told Sky News host Andrew Bolt. “I love the dynamic of the song and the words – the words are inclusive; that’s what makes me feel connected to that.” Mr Nduwimana said he became a permanent citizen in Australia around the time Mr Clarke became interim CEO of Rugby Australia. “He (Rob Clarke) said, ‘you know what, I want to celebrate this day’, then he gave me the opportunity to sing.” The musician sang what is widely recognised as one of the best renditions of the national anthem on the night of the third 2020 Bledisloe clash between the Wallabies and the All Blacks. “It was really overwhelming, it was really interesting and exciting times for me to be able to stand up there and just express my heart and my gratitude to everyone, to all Australians and all the people who had been behind the scenes helping me to get through everything,” Mr Nduwimana said.
