8-year-old takes 9-inch kitchen knife into classroom and 'threatens to stab police officer in the heart'

AN eight-year-old girl took a knife into a primary school and threatened to stab a cop in the heart, as the UK struggles to get a control on the knife crime epidemic.

North Yorkshire Police said officers attended a primary school in the Harrogate district on February 18 after a young pupil produced a kitchen knife in class.North Yorkshire Police confiscated this kitchen knife from the schoolgirlAn Ofsted report earlier this monthA spokeswoman for the North Yorkshire force said: "The class was evacuated and the police were called."The incident was brought to a safe conclusion and no-one was injured and the knife recovered.

Judith Kirk, North Yorkshire’s assistant director for education, said it had been an isolated incident and said safeguarding was the county council's statutory duty, which it took very seriously. She said an academy trust which was involved in this case would have its own policies and procedures to deal with any incident, and had received advice and guidance through North Yorkshire safeguarding protocols.

Police in County Durham also seized a knife from a youngster at the Greenland Community Primary School in County Durham earlier today.
