Residents in five regions, including Greater Sydney, are being told to stay alert ahead of the hot and windy conditions forecast for today. The fire risk is rated as high for much of the rest of the state.
Six New South Wales schools are closed and large parts of the state are preparing for extreme bushfire conditions, while the recovery effort from a large fire still burning on the state's Far South Coast begins.More than 30 fires are already burning in the state, including one that has destroyed two homesExtreme fire danger warnings and total fire bans have been issued for the Greater Sydney, Greater Hunter and North West regions, as well as the Lower and Upper Central West Plains.
"We just obviously want the public to adhere to these warnings and bans, because the last thing we need is any new fires in the landscape." NSW Police said the cause of the fire had not been determined but it was not being treated as suspicious. "We want people to remain vigilant as there's some potential for some erratic fire behaviour today around the time of the weather change.
"We know that unfortunately some of the area that burned is in a similar location to the 2019/20 fires, so there definitely is that compounding trauma for many people.
