New data reveals that three schools in Salford have the highest truancy rates in Greater Manchester. Buile Hill Academy had the worst truancy rate, with students missing 11,905 days of school through unauthorised absences in the 2022/23 school year. The Lowry Academy and The Albion Academy also had high truancy rates.

New data has shone a light on schools with the worst truancy rates in Greater Manchester . It has revealed that the worst three schools for skiving in the city-region are in Salford .

A session is half a day of school and a student is classed as persistently absent if they miss 10 per cent of sessions or more in an academic year. There were a total of 80,434 students who were persistently absent in Greater Manchester last year. That works out as 19.7 per cent of pupils in our region.

Claire Coy, principal of The Lowry Academy, said: “Since joining United Learning, The Lowry Academy has made significant progress in raising attendance – a challenge which our predecessor school had been facing for many years. "Whilst attendance is steadily increasing, there are still pockets within the local community where attendance is lower than it should be. We remain steadfast in our commitment to addressing this issue so that every single one of our students can take full advantage of all the opportunities available here.”

The study – which highlighted findings from focus groups with parents – came amid mounting concerns about the rise in children missing school in England.
