Charities say that knowing how long you have left can help you make the most of your final years and 'plan' for death.

Scientists have trained an artificial intelligence model to predict how long a cancer patient has to live.

Dr Sarah Holmes, chief medical officer at Marie Curie, said: “Greater certainty around prognosis, when someone has a terminal illness, will no doubt bring comfort to some people. However I routinely support patients who do not wish to know how long they have left when they are told they have an illness they won’t recover from.

The AI model examined over 400,000 patient records from the National Cancer Database who were diagnosed with breast, thyroid and pancreatic cancers in 2015 and 2017Top Trending Stories Today Northwestern University McGaw Medical Centre in Chicago used it to train the algorithms to recognise patterns between characteristics at diagnosis and patients’ survival at five years, and then to rank the factors with the greatest influence on survival.
