A fossil discovered by a retired chicken farmer in the 1990s has been identified by expert scientists as a new type of Triassic amphibian.

UNSW and Australian Museum Palaeontologist Lachlan Hart said the fossil was named Arenaerpeton supinatus, due to how the fossil was found as the name translates from Latin to sand creeper laying on its back.

“This particular one that we’re talking about looked a fair bit like a Chinese giant salamander that we might see today, but it was a lot thicker, it had a much bigger head, it had some pretty gnarly teeth and a very robust body.”
