Scientists at the University of Nottingham identify enzyme in sandflies, paving the way for targeted traps to control Leishmaniasis.

Leishmaniais a dangerous disease that manifests in various forms such as mild skin ulcers and severe systemic infections. It also affectsNow, scientists from the University of Nottingham’s School of Chemistry have found a new way to possibly control and reduce its prevalence. There is a specific enzyme the species carries that produces a pheromone attractant. This attractant can be capitalized on for its control.

Leishmaniasis is transmitted to humans through sandfly bites, with over 90 sandfly species identified as potential carriers of the parasites. However,. The study revealed that it has a Terpene Synthase responsible for producing the terpene pheromone sobralene. The sandfly employs this pheromone to attract others for mating.

Most cases of visceral leishmaniasis occur in Brazil. Still, you can find the disease in large parts of the tropics and subtropicsutilize terpene pheromones to attract females and other males to mating sites. Professor Neil Oldham, leading the study, expressed the challenges faced in finding the enzyme, stated, “Finding this enzyme has been very difficult, and we have been hunting for it for over two years.”
