The cortege travelled down the village high street before Salmond's coffin was carried into the church. Among the notable faces in attendance was former speaker of the House of Commons John Bercow. "We told him what we were doing and within weeks he had us in Brussels at the fishery commission. He was such a big part of it. Without him we wouldn't have got as far as we got with it."We stayed in touch after that and met on a lot of occasions. He was a good friend. To me, he was my hero."

"I've had a great affinity with Strichen over the years so I just wanted to give him a final farewell and to see the turnout has been great.""He was a man you could go to for any problem and he would sort it out. Obviously things have changed with the political movement over the last few years, but I think you will just look back on this day and say how close he was to leading Scotland to independence.
