Glasgow is leading the way in tackling single-use cup waste with the launch of Borrow Cup, a multi-brand returnable drinking cup scheme. Over 40 outlets, including Costa Coffee, Burger King, and Caffe Nero, are participating in the three-month trial, offering customers the chance to use Borrow Cups for a £1 deposit, with discounts or loyalty perks. The initiative aims to shift habits and make reusable cups the norm.

Scotland has taken a groundbreaking step towards reducing waste from single-use products with the launch of Borrow Cup , the UK's first multi-brand returnable drinking cup scheme. Initiated on Monday in Glasgow , over 40 participating outlets, including prominent high-street names like Costa Coffee, Burger King, Caffe Nero, and Tinderbox, as well as popular local establishments such as Kelvingrove Museum, Sprigg, and Glasgow City Chambers, are offering this innovative service.

The brainchild of charity Hubbub and Reposit, a reuse start-up, Borrow Cup is undergoing a three-month trial period with the ambitious goal of nationwide expansion if successful. Customers visiting any of the participating stores will have the opportunity to enjoy their beverages from a Borrow Cup for a refundable £1 deposit. In most cases, this entitles them to a discount or loyalty rewards. Available in three sizes, the cups can be returned for either a fresh, clean cup for their next purchase or a handy £1 voucher. Hubbub's research reveals that while approximately 75% of Britons own a reusable cup, only about a third use it at least once every four weeks. Zero Waste Scotland's stark statistics paint a clear picture of the problem: Scotland alone consumes 388 million disposable cups annually. Gavin Ellis, co-founder of Hubbub, states, 'We know disposable cup waste is an issue Scotland is keen to tackle so we are delighted to launch the UK’s first cross-brand returnable cup initiative here in Glasgow.' He emphasizes the project's sustainability focus, adding, 'By making it easy and convenient for people to choose reusable cups, we hope Borrow Cup will shift habits and help to make reusable cups the norm.' He underscores the importance of public participation, saying, 'The success of the project hinges on how many people use it, and crucially how many cups are returned to be used over and over. For it to be a success, we need the people of Glasgow to get behind Borrow Cup so we can show the rest of the UK what is possible.' Stuart Chidley, co-founder of Reposit, expressed his excitement, stating, 'As a local business we are delighted to be enabling local people, local and national businesses to make a simple switch from single-use to returnable cups. The world is watching how Glasgow is leading the way so that they can follow.' Several participating businesses have also voiced their enthusiasm for the initiative. Nicola Pierce, director of commercial planning, environment, social and governance at Burger King UK, commented, 'Burger King UK is excited to partner with Hubbub to bring Borrow Cup to Glasgow. This industry collaboration allows us to explore innovative ways to offer our customers a convenient and sustainable alternative and we look forward to seeing the results.' Gareth Hopley, head of communications at Caffe Nero, stated, 'We have long been supporters of recycling schemes for disposable cups, such as the Valpak Scheme, and we’re delighted to be partnering on Borrow Cup. We already offer additional loyalty stamps to any customer who uses a reusable cup in any of our stores, and Borrow Cup will sit perfectly alongside it. I’m sure it will be hugely successful.
