Scotland 's 'ugliest' and 'prettiest' towns of 2024 have been named but, only 25 miles separate the two.
While Queensferry near Edinburgh came out on top as the most attractive town in Scotland, according to the Telegraph, Cumbernauld is the country's "ugliest" place. Despite the town being criticised by The Telegraph for its "spirit-sapping brutalist architecture" and "concrete-savaged centre", Cumbernauld does have some things going for it, such as "decent green spaces" and "no shortage of local passion and drive". In 2017 it was even recognised with a Garden for Life Biodiversity award.
Listing the North Lanarkshire town as the 'ugliest', the Telegraph wrote: "Few, bar the most committed fans of spirit-sapping brutalist architecture, would describe the concrete-savaged centre today as fabulous. Cumbernauld retains the unwanted distinction of being the only Scottish town labelled Scotland's 'most dismal' twice by the Carbuncle Awards.
