The Daily Record has put together a guide to the top 20 beaches to visit in Scotland in 2025, from secluded island bays to peaceful stretches of sand in the heart of major cities.
Now that 2025 has properly kicked off, it is time to start thinking about how to make the most of it. There is a reason why Scotland's spectacular rugged landscapes draw millions of visitors from around the world each year.
With magnificent views out over the Firth of Forth, Gullane is a great spot to head no matter what time of year. When the weather warms up a bit, though, there is no better spot for a seaside picnic — while the crazy golf course nearby is also a must-visit. Balmedie Beach also benefits from plenty of space for car parking, as well as toilets and a volunteer-run beach wheelchair service. There are even barbecue stands and picnic tables for you to enjoy when the sun is shining.
While the beach can get busy when the sun is shining, it is spacious enough not to matter. Meanwhile, younger visitors will love its adventure play area that features inclusive equipment for kids of all abilities and allows them to captain their very own ship. Dornoch Beach extends from Dornoch Point all the way to the mouth of the Loch Fleet National Nature Reserve. The Dornoch Firth is a Site of Special Scientific Interest that is home to a wide variety of nationally important nesting birds, flora, and fauna.
While at Saddell Bay, you probably won't come across many other visitors. What you will notice, though, is a jaw-dropping cast-iron humanoid sculpture created by celebrated artist Antony Gormley that forever gazes out over the serene waters. West Beach in particular benefits from magnificent vistas framed by the historic Covesea Lighthouse — which you can head to yourself at low tide when the wide sands are exposed. Meanwhile, West Beach's various rockpools, cliffs, make it the perfect spot for a wee adventure.
Coldingham Bay has been popular amongst bathers for more than 100 years thanks to its crystal-clear and clean waters. With plenty of rock pools ripe for investigating, it is a great choice for little ones too. Interestingly, it is home to a ranger's hut where you can learn more about Clachtoll Beach's unique geology and history. Meanwhile, if you fancy yourself as a talented sandcastle builder, you can even take part in the beach's annual sand sculpture contest in August.
A great spot for a soothing walk to clear your head, the sunsets here are simply indescribable. If you are a keen swimmer, though, Machir Bay might not be the place for you as the currents can be overwhelmingly strong.
